The hours after a crash matter more than most people realize. Here's exactly what to do to protect your health and your right to compensation.
1. Get to safety and check for injuries
If you can, move to a safe location and check yourself and others for injuries. Call 911 immediately if anyone is hurt. Even if you feel fine, adrenaline can mask serious injuries — always accept medical evaluation.
2. Call the police
A police report creates an official record of the crash. In Georgia, you're required to report accidents involving injury, death, or significant property damage. Get the reporting officer's name and the report number.
3. Document everything
Photograph the vehicles, the scene, road conditions, and any visible injuries. Collect the other driver's insurance and contact information, and get names and numbers for any witnesses.
4. Be careful what you say
Do not admit fault, and avoid giving a recorded statement to the other driver's insurance company. Even an innocent apology can be used to reduce your claim.
5. See a doctor — and keep going
Prompt medical care protects both your health and your claim. Follow your treatment plan and keep every record. Gaps in treatment are one of the first things insurers use to devalue a case.
6. Call a personal injury attorney
Before you accept any settlement, talk to a lawyer. An early offer is almost never the full value of your claim. Our case evaluations are free — call 229-588-2608 or complete our contact form.
